Learn about the PCS Process

Lead up text: A clear step-by-step guide to help service members and families understand the PCS process and their options.

Step 1: Receive PCS Orders

Your journey begins when you receive your Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders. Review them carefully and note key dates and entitlements.

Step 2: Schedule Your Move

Contact your transportation office to schedule your move. Decide between a government-managed or personally procured move (PPM/DITY). Make sure to keep copies of all travel and move-related documents.

Step 3: Prepare for Packing

Organize your belongings, separate items not to be packed, and gather important documents. Consider donating or selling items you don’t need. Label boxes clearly and keep an essentials box for immediate needs.

Step 4: Moving Day

Be present during packing and loading. Double-check inventory and ensure all special instructions are communicated to the movers. Keep important documents and essentials with you.

Step 5: Arrival & Unpacking

Upon arrival, inspect your belongings and report any damage promptly. Unpack essentials first and settle into your new home. Take time to file any claims if necessary.
